The hadith-based exegesis (tafsīr al-riwāʾī) of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) constitutes one of the earliest and most authoritative approaches to Qur’anic interpretation in the Shi‘i tradition. Known as the tradition-based (atharī) method, it explains Qur’anic verses through the teachings of the infallible Imams, whose interpretive authority is affirmed in the Hadith al-Thaqalayn. Among its diverse dimensions, scientific exegesis occupies a distinctive place by engaging scientific knowledge to clarify the meanings of revelation while maintaining the primacy of the Qur’an over empirical theories. Despite extensive scholarship on scientific exegesis in the broader Islamic intellectual tradition, the scientific content of the exegetical narrations transmitted from the Ahl al-Bayt has received relatively limited and unsystematic attention. Adopting a descriptive-analytical approach, this study examines the role of scientific themes in the Qur’anic interpretations of the Imams and analyzes selected narrations from semantic and epistemological perspectives. The findings indicate that the Ahl al-Bayt occasionally employed contemporary scientific understanding to facilitate comprehension of divine teachings without reducing revelation to the framework of experimental science. In addition, some narrations contain profound observations and anticipatory statements that may be regarded as scientifically significant or extraordinary in light of later discoveries. The study concludes that the scientific exegesis of the Ahl al-Bayt presents a balanced model for integrating revelation, reason, and scientific inquiry while preserving the Qur’an’s guidance-oriented mission. This approach also offers promising opportunities for interdisciplinary research at the intersection of Qur’anic studies, hadith scholarship, and the history and philosophy of science.
